Service for requesting maternity allowance

Description

The “maternity allowance” service allows you to request a financial benefit in relation to:

  • at the birth of a child;
  • to adopt a child

a) if national adoption must not exceed 6 years of age,

b) if international adoption does not exceed the age of majority.

The financial benefit consists of a one-time payment into your current account by INPS.

Who is it for?

The “maternity allowance” service is aimed at:

  • to the mother;
  • to the father, in the event of abandonment of the minor by the mother, exclusive custody of the minor to the father or death of the mother

that:

  • does not receive financial contributions for maternity/paternity leave;
  • receives financial contributions of an amount lower than the maternity allowance;
  • is resident in the municipal area;
  • has Italian citizenship, citizenship of an EU member state, or a non-EU citizen with a valid residence permit;
  • can be classified within a specific ISEE income bracket (for the year 2025 the ISEE must be less than or equal to €20.382,90).

How do

To request maternity benefit, citizens can:

  • fill out the application online, using the dedicated digital service;
  • make an appointment with the relevant office and go to the counter.

The request can be made:

  • from the mother;
  • by the father, in the event of abandonment of the minor by the mother, exclusive custody of the minor to the father or death of the mother.

What is needed

To correctly complete the application, the citizen must provide the necessary documentation and information:

  • ISEE certification;
  • IBAN of the registered or joint account holder to which the amount is to be credited;
  • amount of maternity benefit received at the time of applying for maternity allowance, if the applicant receives a financial contribution;
  • a copy of a valid residence permit or of the permit application or renewal thereof, in the case of non-EU citizenship;
  • adoption/pre-adoptive placement order, in the case of adoption or pre-adoptive placement;
  • divorce decree or separation approval, in the event of separation or divorce;
  • declaration of sole custody issued by the Social Services or order of the Judicial Authority, in the case of sole custody of the minor to the father;
  • death certificate, in case of the mother's death.

What you get

If the citizen's request is accepted, he or she will receive what he or she has requested, namely the maternity allowance for each child.

Times and deadlines

The application must be submitted within six (6) months of the birth or entry into the family of the adopted minor.

The municipal authority carries out the investigation and periodically forwards the received applications to INPS, which will then pay the maternity allowance by crediting the indicated IBAN.

Maximum duration of the administrative procedure: 30 days

Further information

The allowance is also due in the event of the death of a newborn child.

The allowance is doubled in the event of a twin birth.
